WaPo: Members of Stryker Combat Brigade in Afghanistan accused of killing civilians for sport

For weeks, according to Army charging documents, rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, floated the idea. Then, one day last winter, a solitary Afghan man approached them in the village of La Mohammed Kalay. The “kill team” activated the plan.

One soldier created a ruse that they were under attack, tossing a fragmentary grenade on the ground. Then others opened fire.

According to charging documents, the unprovoked, fatal attack on Jan. 15 was the start of a months-long shooting spree against Afghan civilians that resulted in some of the grisliest allegations against American soldiers since the U.S. invasion in 2001. Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones.

The subsequent investigation has raised accusations about whether the military ignored warnings that the out-of-control soldiers were committing atrocities. The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the Army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed.

Two more slayings would follow. Military documents allege that five members of the unit staged a total of three murders in Kandahar province between January and May. Seven other soldiers have been charged with crimes related to the case, including hashish use, attempts to impede the investigation and a retaliatory gang assault on a private who blew the whistle.

Evolution of a national resistance

August 3, 2010 1 comment

A word from the author:

I made this animated map showing IEDs as documented in the recent major data leak facilitated by Wikileaks (overlaid on a NATO map of the area). It starts off slow, but the longer you wait, the more furious the attacks seem to get.The green explosions are ones in which no one was hurt, yellow ones are injuries only, and red ones are fatal IEDs. On the death and injury tallies, the left column is friendlies (including both allied forces and civilians), and the right column is so-called “enemies”. Everything else should be obvious.

I created this with some quick one-off custom software written late at night to do the required animation (loosely inspired by a tool I built in the 90s to animate web server log files, but only very loosely since I no longer have the source code). The reason I mention this is to apologize in advance for any errors.

FINALLY, please do feel free to repost this anywhere you would like. If you need raw video, or want my cleaned CSV files of the IED data, or want a different rendering, feel free tp drop me a line at or at my website.

Afghans Protest After NATO Kills Father of Five

But this time we do know the victim. Amanullah, a 30 year old auto mechanic and father of five, who made a panicked phone call to his distant relative, Afghan MP Safiya Sidiqi, that the family compound was being raided by what he assumed was a “gang of thieves.”

He had no reason to think anything different. After all, who figures that the US would launch a night raid against the family home of a member of parliament? Shot six times by the raiding US troops, including in the face and heart, Amanullah was slain on the spot.

Well, at least he is creating jobs in Afghanistan…

November 30, 2009 Leave a comment

If you had any illusions that the Messiah‘s jobs summit was anything more than a PR ploy, this should persuade you otherwise: 130 corporate types dressed in very expensive designer wear sitting in a room – each with their own agenda – recounting their experiences with unemployment. (Uh, none)

A one day dog and pony show for those who will be watching it from some homeless shelter in Pontiac, Michigan – even the homeless need entertainment. There will, no doubt, be an appearance by some unemployed mother of three to provide a human touch for the evening news.

MESSIAH: We need jobs! We must grow the economy!

Wash, rinse, repeat as needed…

Google, Disney chiefs due at Obama jobs summit

About 130 experts from unions, government, academia and other companies will seek ways to jumpstart job creation.

NEW YORK ( — Executives from Google and Walt Disney will join other company chiefs, academics, labor leaders and mayors at President Obama’s jobs summit this week, the White House said Sunday.

Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) CEO Eric Schmidt and Disney (DIS, Fortune 500) chief Bob Iger will be among about 130 people attending Thursday’s meeting, according to a partial guestlist.

Other prominent CEOs slated to attend include Randall Stephenson of AT&T (T, Fortune 500), Brian Roberts of Comcast (CMCSA, Fortune 500), James McNerney of Boeing (BA, Fortune 500) and Frederick Smith of FedEx (FDX, Fortune 500).

They’ll be joined by such experts as Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist, former Fed vice chairman Alan Blinder, United Steel Workers president Leo Gerard and San Antonio mayor Julian Castro.

Obama discussed the summit, aimed at helping solve an employment crisis that has cost the nation 7.3 million jobs since the start of 2008, during a cabinet meeting last week.

“We are going to be bringing together people from all across the country … to explore how we can jumpstart the hiring that typically lags behind economic growth, but we don’t want to wait,” the president said. “We want to see if we can accelerate it.”

It is said the poster on the left depicts a woman who was killed while demonstrating against the election results walking by a demonstration in Iran. You will note it’s resemblance to the famous poster of the Messiah from last year’s campaign on the right.

We can’t confirm or deny the story about the woman depicted in the first poster. We can, however, confirm that He Is The Messiah.

And, we do note the heavy handed campaign being directed from Washington against Iran, and note that it has become something of a cause célèbre among otherwise semi-intelligent mouth breathers on the left, who, since the wars against the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan have now received the blessing of the Messiah, find themselves aching to see those savage assaults expanded to neighboring Iran.

Interestingly enough, the mouth breathers on the left have been joined by the doctor killers on the right to push the situation in Iran into the public conversation here in the United States.

If you caught Meet the Press this weekend, you will note that that asshole, David Gregory, spent his entire interview with the Israeli fascist chieftain Benjamin Netanyahu questioning him not about Israel’s continuing occupation of Palestine, but about whether said fascist Israeli politician believed the Messiah was taking a strong enough stand against Iran.

And, today, via comes the above “Neda” poster which some nerd at CBS conveniently seems to have “discovered” while surfing the web for pornography over the weekend.

From the Newsbusters report:

Obama and Neda: same struggle!

Who says Pres. Obama isn’t backing the Iranian uprising strongly enough?  Why, supporters of the struggle have chosen to immortalize Neda, the young student reportedly slain by the current regime, by creating a poster of her in the style of the iconic Obama poster made famous during his presidential campaign.

Might that have been CBS’s subliminal message this morning?  Of all the possible posters of the fallen girl who has become the symbol of the Iranian uprising, the Early Show chose the one displayed here in the unmistakeable style Shepard Fairey used to create his Obama poster.

CBS reporter Richard Roth implied that CBS had discovered the Obamacized poster of Neda on the internet, and that may well be true.  But surely there were any number of posters CBS might have displayed. That it chose this one was surely no coincidence.

We would suggest that, before any of you doctor-killing, mouth-breathing conservative/progressive holy warriors get your panties in a bunch over events in Iran, that you stop and realize how the United States has spent most of the last sixty years:

  1. Overthroing a democratically elected government in Iran;
  2. Installing a puppet dictator, then training and arming his secret police;
  3. Instigating and supporting an invasion of Iran by its neighbor, Iraq;
  4. Shooting down at least one civilian passenger plane;
  5. Stationing aircraft carriers to threaten Iran;
  6. Invading neighbors of Iran on two borders; and,
  7. Pursuing and engaging in hostile acts against that country, including economic sanctions and political isolation.

So the outrage you are now feeling against the clerics in Iran over the alleged events leading to the reported death of an unknown woman (who you believe is named “Neda” because CBS told you that her name is “Neda”) portrayed in the above poster is the product no less than sixty years of sustained propaganda aimed at you by Washington.

We suggest you go watch, Wag the Dog.

At least consider this scenario:

The Messiah is sincere about his desire to open dialogue with Iran. He ran on this position, he went to Cairo and apologized for at least one previous insufferable interference in Iran internal politics.

Who doesn’t want this opening to happen? Who wants this opening to be rejected both in Iran and in the United States? And, how might they create an incident designed specifically to head off any dialogue?

You’re being played, folks…

End this war too, Barack…

From the news today, this:

Israel freed a notorious Lebanese attacker and four others Wednesday after Hezbollah handed over two black coffins with the bodies of Israel soldiers, a dramatic prisoner swap that closes a painful chapter from the 2006 war in Lebanon.

And,in Afghanistan we get word that US troops have abandoned their positions which were overrun last week:

Omar Sami, spokesman for the Nuristan provincial governor, said American and Afghan soldiers quit the base on Tuesday afternoon. He said they took the district mayor with them.

Sami said U.S. troops armed local police with more than 20 guns before they left, but that the officers had fled the village and crossed into neighboring Kunar province when 100 militants moved into Wanat.

Now is the time to press for a negotiated settlement in Afghanistan – before the administration can reinforce troops in the area.

If the Israelis can negotiate an agreement with Hezbollah, we should be able to negotiate an agreement with all Afghan parties to end this ridiculous conflict.

Barack, can you smell what we’re cooking?
